Who we are

Wellington exists to see people truly know Christ, understand God's word and live for him through the power of Holy Spirit

core

values

There are four values which are at the core of who we areas a church. We are a church community who value:

1. Faithful Teaching of God’s Word

Paul in his letter to Timothy wrote, “All Scripture is breathed out by God…” (2 Timothy 3:16). As a Church we believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and is vital to every aspect of our lives.

We therefore seek to teach the Word faithfully in a way which helps people understand what God is revealing to us through it, and the relevance of it in our lives.

2. Seeking God through prayer

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

In everything we do, we strive to be a Church that seeks God for His wisdom, direction, and leading through prayer.

3. Gathering for edifying fellowship

In Acts 2 the early church gathered regularly to fellowship with one another in a way that was edifying (to edify: to uplift, instruct, improve).

The writer of Hebrews encourages us to “stir up one another to love and good work.” (Hebrews 10:24). As a Church we value gathering together in ways which encourage, support, and build each other up in our faith.

4. Remaining Gospel Focused

The great commission for the Church is to make disciples (Matthew 28:19).
The word ‘gospel’ simply means ‘Good news’.

Our call is to share the good news of the gospel with all people, and so as a Church we aim to keep the gospel at the centre of all we do.

Our

history

Wellington Presbyterian Church can trace its beginnings back to 1828, when it was founded as the “3rd Ballymena” congregation. The first minister, Rev Alexander Peatterson being installed on 6th April 1830.

Due to the growing number of congregants attending after the 1859 Revival the building was deemed inadequate and so a new larger Church, which became known as West Church was built and opened in Ballymena in 1863.

Not all members of the original congregation moved to the new West Church. Those who remained continued to meet for fellowship in the original building and thus became recognised as Wellington Street Presbyterian Church.

The church remained at the original site until 2009. Due to the increasing number of attendees and the need for more functional space, it was decided to move to a bigger site away from the town’s commercial shopping area. A new purpose built Church complex was opened on the Sourhill Road, Ballymena in April 2009. Its name therefore changed to Wellington Presbyterian, and the Church continues to grow and thrive within this new community.
